Speech-Language Pathologist since 1971
Textbooks I have written include the Essentials of Communication Sciences and Disorders (1st ed. 2012, 2nd ed. 2018, 3rd ed., 2022; publisher: Jones & Bartlett Learning). The Essentials texts are intended to be introductory texts to the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology and are written in user-friendly (student-friendly) language for people who have no background in the professions. All illustrations and photographs are in full-color and there are extensive references. The Essentials texts were written for both U.S. and international students and there are numerous citations of literature from journals of many countries.
The Foundations of Communication Sciences and Disorders (2008; publisher: Delmar Cengage Learning), is considered the most comprehensive (920 pages) and thoroughly referenced (over 1,500) text ever written for speech-language pathologists and audiologists.
I am the primary author of the text Counseling Skills for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (1st ed. 2004, 2nd ed. 2011, Delmar Cengage Learning), which has been used in universities throughout the U.S., as well as universities in Australia, Great Britain, Canada, and New Zealand (possibly elsewhere). The Counseling Skills text is considered the most comprehensive and authoritative (over 750 references) text available on the subject of counseling in speech-language pathology. My coauthor (Lydia V. Flasher, Ph.D.) is a clinical psychologist with years of teaching, training, and clinical experience and she helped provide depth and breadth to the text that is not available in other texts on this subject.
Assessment materials include the Ross Information Processing Assessment-Geriatric (RIPA-G) (1st ed. 1996, 2nd ed. 2012). The RIPA-G assesses the cognitive-linguistic functioning of elderly individuals and is particularly helpful for assessing memory, orientation, and problem solving.
The Safety Awareness Functional Evaluation (SAFE) is
part of The Source for Safety: Cognitive Retraining for
Independent Living (2008, LinguiSystems [now Pro-Ed]). The SAFE
systematically assesses awareness, cognition, and problem-solving
for safety in the hospital, home, and community environments.
The subtests of the SAFE assess (1) Room / Bedroom and Bathroom; (2)
Wheelchairs
and Assistive Devices; (3) Swallowing and Diet; (4)
Medications and Health; (5) Floors and Stairs; (6) Kitchens and
Appliances; (7) Home Safety; (8) Community – Outside; (9) Community
– Inside; and
(10) General Precautions. The SAFE is very
helpful in determining functional therapy plans and decision
making for discharge of patients.
Therapy materials include The Source for Safety: Cognitive Retraining for Independent Living (2008, LinguiSystems [Pro-Ed]). The Source for Safety is unique among therapy manuals in that its total focus is on patient safety in the hospital, home, and community; i.e., each of the areas the SAFE assesses. An efficacy study demonstrated that the use of the therapy manual helps patients become more overall safety conscious and increases their ability to intentionally problem-solve for safety during ADLs in a variety of environments. The Source for Safety is a "best seller" for LinguiSystems [Pro-Ed].
The Classic Aphasia Therapy Stimuli (CATS) Kit (Plural Publishing, 2006) meets a need of many speech-language pathologists working in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, home health, and private practice. The need is to have simple, clear, bold, black and white illustrations of common objects and basic verbs to use as visual stimuli for patients and clients (color photographs can create too much "noise in the system" for some patients, particularly new or severe, or patients with TBIs). The illustrations are on heavy 8½ X 8½ card stock for durability. In addition to having the illustrations, printed words in large, bold, black print on 2½ X 8½ card stock are used to add reading tasks to the therapy. The printed word cards have English on one side and Spanish on the other. The 90 common nouns (10 cards per category, e.g., home, transportation, food, clothing) and 20 common verbs with corresponding printed word cards can be used for the lowest levels of attention to the highest levels of cognitive therapy for reasoning, judgment and problem solving. An instructive therapy manual comes with the CATS that gives numerous examples of how to use the cards with a variety of aphasia and cognitive impairments.
